Housing in Vienna is a very complex subject. A joint project with the Vienna Education Board “Stadtschulrat Wien” has been developed under the title “Housing in Vienna” in order to increase the interest of kids and youngsters in the subject of social housing and also housing in general. Simple teaching resources have been developed by experts, together with teachers, to be used during classes and projects linked to schools. They tackle important subjects such as the history of social housing in Vienna, information on the housing market for young people and much more.
Vienna Tenants’ Support Meets Schools
Vienna’s Tenants’ Support Centre (“Wiener Mieterhilfe”) is now available to be involved in school initiatives or for excursions where pupils visit the Tenants’ Support Centre (training room). The aim is to inform young people about their rights and about what options are available to them, at an early stage. There are many things to learn about: from the search for an apartment to the conclusion of a rental agreement.
The contents of the teaching module include how to read a housing advertisement ‘correctly’, the selection criteria for an apartment, contact with landlords, the amount of rent and the ending of a rental agreement.
In addition to simple legal information, the pupils are also trained to calculate rent based on specific examples, the differences between gross and net rental interest as well as the components of the rent.
