Construction of municipal flats new

For some years, Vienna has been a rapidly growing city. In 2015, the City of Vienna decided – due to the increased demand for particularly affordable flats – to build “municipal flats” again

In 2004 it was decided that social housing should be built only by limited-profit construction companies. By then Vienna had enough housing units and invested also in urban renewal. However, in 2015, the City of Vienna decided – due to the increased demand for affordable accommodation – to build “municipal flats new”. By not requiring a “tenant contribution” that means a financial contribution from the tenant per square meter which will be used as equity by the limited-profit housing association municipal flats new offer good conditions: A gross rent of € 7.50 per square metre of usable living space is charged. The flat-size is between 40 and 100 m² and apartments have a balcony. Generous courtyards should ensure a high quality of life. 4,000 new municipal flats are due to be built by 2020.
