Smarter Together

"Smarter Together" is the joint Smart City project run by Vienna, Munich and Lyon and co-funded by the EU H2020 programme. Lighthouse innovations contribute to the achievement of the UN-climate goals as well as to positive social dynamics.

The European lighthouse cities Vienna, Munich and Lyon, the follower cities Santiago de Compostela, Sofia and Venice and the observer cities Kiev and Yokohama have come together to improve their citizens’ quality of life by developing innovative solutions together in relation to large-scale housing refurbishments, local energy solutions, e-mobility and data management. These solutions are developed in conjunction with the participation of local residents and all have a social aspect to them. "Smarter Together" will prepare the ground for large-scale replication and ensure in-depth knowledge transfer about the setting up of smart city business models and user-centric innovation in order to contribute positively towards society.

Vienna’s ‘Smarter Together’-urban renewal and project area is located between the main road - Simmeringer Hauptstraße - and the Eastern rail track (i.e. the areas of Geiselberg, Enkplatz, Braunhuberviertel). In total, 21,000 inhabitants will directly benefit from smart solutions in the areas of refurbishment, energy, mobility and IT/ communication technology.

The goal is to shape an innovative and environmentally-friendly district (Simmering) and contribute towards a superior quality of life in the city of Vienna. This will be achieved via forward-thinking Smart City solutions that will be developed jointly by all partners, together with the inhabitants of these areas. "Smarter Together" is currently THE Smart City urban renewal initiative, which involves numerous stakeholders in Vienna.

Facts & Figures

Taking a holistic approach, concrete activities provide tangible results that are the basis for anchoring new methods, approaches and technological solutions in the urban institutional networks and the cities.

  • Three residential neighborhoods with a total of 1,300 inhabitants will undergo a smart refurbishment. This corresponds to a total floor space of 63,000 m2.
  • 6,000,000 kilowatts per hour (kw/h) will be saved every year (in all the refurbished housing complexes together). This corresponds to the energy-use of approx. 700 housing units.
  • 9,000,000 kw/h will be provided by renewable energy sources (thermal as well as electric energy) guaranteeing a more sustainable and future-oriented energy supply and resulting in considerable savings for the tenants in energy and heating costs.
  • Total saving of around 550 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2).
  • 900 jobs will be saved and/or created.

9 departments of the Vienna City administration are included in the intensive governance learning process. Experiences and results of the project will be integrated in a sustainable way all over the city.
