Affordable housing for all citizens

Vienna is one of the European capitals which networks actively across borders, with its direct neighbors, in the EU and internationally in the area of housing.

Vienna has a lot of experience and knowledge in affordable housing. Therefore, the city is involved at an international level in drawing attention to the range of solutions available to everyone to increase the amount of affordable housing in urban areas in Europe. In various working groups Viennese experts have established approaches for the EU. This should make it easier for cities to provide their citizens with affordable and ecological housing. Below you can see in which international initiatives, committees and working groups Vienna is involved.

EU URBAN AGENDA – PARTNERSHIP ON HOUSING

The main aim of the EU Urban Agenda Housing Partnership is to realise the full potential of the European Union and involve urban authorities in achieving better regulation, better funding and a better knowledge base and knowledge exchange on affordable housing.

MAYOR’S RESOLUTION

Mayors of 30 major European cities have signed the Vienna “Resolution for Social Housing in Europe” where it is stated that housing, especially social housing, is a clear issue for the member states, demanding the current EU-legislation to be changed in line with the principle of subsidization.

IBA_VIENNA – NEW SOCIAL HOUSING

The IBA_Vienna  is the first of its kind to be launched in Vienna. By organizing an international Building Exhibition (IBA), Vienna aims at developing proposals for future oriented solutions and approaches for the EU. The IBA_Vienna will therefore pay its attentions to projects in new building areas as well as in the existing housing stock.

 

EUROCITIES

The city network EUROCITIES currently represents 139 cities, each with a population of more than 250,000 inhabitants, as well as 40 partner cities. The voice of these 130 million citizens cannot be ignored by EU institutions.

UNECE

Vienna represents Austria in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) in the “Committee for Housing and Land Management”. It is this committee where the topic of sustainable urban residential development, plays a key role.

ERHIN - Responsible Housing Initiative

The city of Vienna and Wiener Wohnen are committed to the ERHIN initiative. It aims to establish corporate social responsibility in social housing in Europe.
