This International Building Exhibition (IBA) focuses on the key issues of new affordable housing and social cohesion. As a leader in the construction and organization of urban social housing, Vienna has decided to initiate ‘IBA_Wien 2022 – New Social Housing’ to develop new ways of providing affordable and high-quality living space in the future. International Building Exhibitionshave been in existence for over 100 years. They deal with planning and building experiments which have an impact sometimes extending far beyond our lifetime. IBA_Wien starts from the present situation and the topics of today, but also intentionally focusses on the challenges of the future, which not only face Vienna, but also many other cities in Europe.
The Memorandum for IBA_Wien describes 3 key topics:
- New social neighbourhoods
- New social qualities
- New social responsibility
These guiding themes form the framework of activities in the coming years and beyond. Leading up to the interim presentation in 2020, a variety of projects and ideas will be collected, checked and discussed by the “International Advisory Committee” (IBA_Wien Beirat) (LINK to Advisory Committee). Outstanding ideas and concepts are being nominated as “IBA-Candidates” and will be developed further together with IBA_Wien, so that in 2022 they can be presented at an international level as examples of a new direction in social housing and as results of experimental processes.
