Affordable housing – a public task

Housing policy in Vienna

The “Viennese model” is repeatedly cited as a best practice example of a successful housing policy that stands for social balance and inclusion.

Internationally, Vienna’s social housing policy is world-known for its long tradition and continuity. The “Viennese model” is repeatedly cited as a best practice example of a successful housing policy that stands for social balance and inclusion. Vienna’s active housing policy is based on the political will of the city government to offer affordable and stable housing for people on low incomes. But social housing is not only aimed at low-income people, it is also intended for broad sections of the population.

Our Vision
“Affordable and adequate housing for all citizens in Vienna”

Vienna offers its resident a very high quality of life. There are hardly other cities which have got such a high standard of living and affordable housing at the same time. This is made possible by building new construction of thousands of subsidized apartments per year and subsidized renovations that upgrade entire neighborhoods.

The supply of social housing on a permanent basis has a strong price-dampening effect. The creation of affordable housing is part of the public services in Vienna. Every year, the city invests about 500 to 600 million euros in affordable housing. Vienna is a safe and socially mixed city. Hundreds of delegations from all over the world visit Vienna every year to learn from the Viennese model of social housing.
